Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group: Mounded Tombs of Ancient Japan

[What it is]
Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group is composed of 49 ancient mounded tombs constructed in the late-4th century to early 5th century on the Osaka plain. After a decade of preparation efforts by the governments of Osaka Prefecture and Sakai, Habikino and Fujiidera cities, the property was inscribed on the World Heritage list in 2019.
[What we did]
JCHC supported the local governments in their producing the noination file and its follow-up works by providing services such as reviewing, translation, editing, cooridnation for film-making, etc., taking intercultural perspective into account.

Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Sites
World Heritage
[What it is]
This property is made of historic silk mill and related sites from the late-19th to the 20th ceuntry. It is a testimony of technical exchange and innovation that allowed mass production of high-qulity silk. It was inscribed on the World Heritage list in 2014.
[What we did]
JCHC supported the government of Gunma Prefecture in their production of the nomination file by adjusting and editing nomination texts, coordinating peer review, translating, etc. In addition, it produced materials for ICOMOS mission and coordinated with overseas heritage consultants for having them review draft nomination texts.

国際シンポジウム「文化遺産を知りそして伝える-メコンがつなぐ文化多様性-」
International Symposium "Cultural Diversity in the region along the Mekong River"
[What it is]
"Cultural Diversity in the region along the Mekong River" was a 3-day event, which the Waseda University Institute for Cultural Heritage mainly organized, comissionned by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Inviting 14 experts and administrators of archaology, architecture and cultural property managment from 5 countries along the Mekong River (Cambodia, Thailand, Viet Nam, Myanmar, Lao PDR), the event held academic exchange sessions and an international symposium.
[What we did]
JCHC assisted in planning and execusion of the event and produced the meeting report in Japanese and English.
ファヤーズテパ遺跡
Fayaz Tepe Archaeological Site
[What it is]
Fayaz Tepe is a Bhuddist archaeological site on the Silk Road, located near Termez, southern Uzbekistan. The town saw its heyday in the first to the third centuries.
[What we did]
JCHC participated in a conservation project of UNESCO Japan Fund-in-Trust for conservation of cultural heritage, and provided technical guidance for preservation of the ruins, instalation of partial covering, restoration of stupas, and planning interpretation center using ancient building techniques.
交河故城遺跡
Jiaohe ancient city Ruins
[What it is]
Jaiaohe ancient city ruins is an urban archaological site located near the site which was once prospered as the city of Turfan, a major strategic point on Silk Road. The remainng earthen structures were severely weathered and they requried immediate protection measures.
[What we did]
JCHC consucted survey for conservation and utilization of the site and drafted a plan, and implemented works against flood, establishing a visitor route, repair work on the remains of northwestern small temple.
大明宮含元殿遺跡
Daming Palace, Hanyuan Hall ruin
[What it is]
Hanyuan Hall was the central construction in the ancient city of Chang'an (present day Xi'an). Its vast podium site was a testimony of the high technical standard of the time, but it was on the verge of collapse due to weathering.
[What we did]
As a UNESCO consultant, JCHC participated in the coservation project and recreated the volume and shape of the original building, while having a solid conservation mesaure. After giving consolidation measure to the original podium, it rebuilt the original appearance over a 50-centimeter-deep protective soil upon the original.
